Choral Workshop with Philip Stopford
CitySound Voices invited composer Philip Stopford to give a choral workshop on 23rd June 2018 at St. Stephen’s Church, Lansdown.
Stopford, whose music is loved and performed by many choirs, led choir members from CitySound Voices, the wider Bath area and beyond, giving us the exciting opportunity to meet him in person and perform his music. The event was well attended, with all appreciating Stopford’s wit and humour as well as the wonderful opportunity to sing with him as as conductor.
Stopford is a composer of English sacred choral music as well as a choir director. He is known for accompanied settings of traditional Latin and English hymns and prayer and for contemporary a capella pieces. Three of his works have appeared in the Classic FM Hall of Fame.
Born in 1977, he began his musical career as a member of the choir at Westminster Abbey and graduated in music from Keble College Oxford. He served as a Choral Director of St. Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast and the Director of Ecclesium Professional Choir. Since 2016 he has worked at Christ Church, Bronxville, near New York in the United States.

Clara Cecilia Atkins
Clara studied music at Bath Spa University specialising in jazz voice, and over the past ten years has performed in many venues in Bath including Green Park Brasserie, Moles, The Holburne Museum and Bath Abbey. She regularly appears as a guest vocalist in the popular 20th Century Foxes Cabaret events at Chapel Arts. Often likened to Ella Fitzgerald, Clara takes inspiration from the greats as well as contemporary vocalists including Liane Carroll and Clare Teal. Known for her clear and expressive tone, Clara performs with emotion and a touch of drama, bringing the music of the American Songbook to life.
She recently performed to two sell-out audiences with the Gorgeous Big Horns Big Band at Wiltshire Music Centre and Chipping Sodbury Music Society.
As well as singing with her jazz band, Clara is a classical soloist, performing with Cantamus Chamber Choir and Freshford Singers. She also runs Clarity Community Choir who rehearse in Bath and Trowbridge.
